8. If your 10-year-old self were transported to your home today, what item would surprise you the most, do you think?

Probably, the refrigeration in my kitchen. I have a large fridge/freezer and also two refrigerator drawers that all "talk" to my phone. Technology in general has come farther than I would have imagined at 10.

7. Do you eat regular meals three times a day? Or do you frequently snack?

I mostly eat regular meals, sometimes augmented by a handful of nuts.

We spent a couple of nights out of town, so I am playing catch up...

4. A spice is a dried seed, fruit, root, bark, or vegetative substance used primarily to flavour, colour, or preserve food. Distinct from herbs (which are the leaves or stems of plants), spices are celebrated for their pungent, aromatic, and sometimes fiery qualities. Do you have a favourite?

I like cumin quite a bit as well as nutmeg and some of the smokey peppers; like urfa.

5. It’s International Bacon Day! What’s your favourite bacon dish (pork, turkey or veggie)?

I like regular pork bacon used as a flavoring in things more than just eating it.

6. Can you think of one (or two!) things that were common in homes when you were growing up, that aren’t around now?

Wired land line telephones, telephone books, and outside clothes lines.

3. Are there any athletic sports (javelin, discus, hurdles, high jump, etc) that you have tried in the past (or still take part in today)?

No. I am short (5'3.5") and have short legs and a more muscular build, so not much of a track and field athlete. I do swim and like that. I am good at it, but not super fast.

2. When you were a teenager, what new technology were you most impressed with? Looking back, has that item been updated or become obsolete?

Probably CDs. I honestly don't remember being impressed by much until the iPhone, but I was no longer a teenager then.

SEPTEMBER:

1. The first US bank robbery took place on this day in 1798. The Bank of Pennsylvania at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was robbed of $162,821. Have you ever had anything stolen?

Not much. We have had two cars broken in to over the years. We do not keep things in our cars, so nothing was stolen, but had to pay to have a smashed window repaired on one and replace a convertible top that was cut on another.

31. In the UK, it’s the Late Summer Bank Holiday. What is the weather forecast, and what are your plans for today?

It is sunny, hot (~90F) and humid today. We are having a bit of a dry spell, but it is still wretchedly humid. I swam first thing and then came home to do a little cooking before a massage. The masseur was sick, so that got canceled and since I have a busy week, I am trying to get ahead on cooking for the week.

29. It’s International Cosplay Day – have you ever taken part in cosplay or seen cosplayers?

Nope, neither.

30. When you were a child, did you own a Slinky? If so, how did you play with it?

I don't think I had one as a child, but I do now. It mostly just sits on a shelf.

28. It’s International Read Comics in Public Day. Launched in 2010, Brian Heater and Sarah Morean also co-created The Daily Cross Hatch, an alternative comics website. They aimed to encourage comic fans to read openly in public spaces. Do you enjoy comic books, or do you read any comic strips daily?

I am not much of a comic book or comic strip person. I did get the first season of the Buffy comic, but did not go beyond that.

27. In 1955, The Guinness Book of World Records was first published. Have you, or anyone you know, ever taken part in a world record attempt?

Yes, actually. The guy who did the plumbing in our kitchen and owns the plumbing company we use is trying to break a world record for "living" underwater with a SCUBA system. I don't understand exactly why, but...

26. In 1951 The film "An American in Paris," with music by George Gershwin, directed by Vincente Minnelli, and starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, premiered in London. Have you ever seen any of Gene Kelly’s movies?

I have seen a few of them. He was an amazing dancer and seemed like a pretty ok human.

25. Have you ever bought any second-hand clothes, or do you prefer to buy new ones? Ever found a bargain in either category?

I prefer new clothes. The only times I have purchased second hand are for Halloween costumes and once, I went with a friend who I let treat me like a human Barbie doll and pick out an outfit head to toe. She loved vintage clothes, but at 6 feet never found things that fit her.

The biggest bargain I ever found was on a pair of Loeffler Randall tall leather boots. They had been returned in summer to a small store that just needed to find someone in my size to try on and sell to. They retailed for $950 and I got them for $150.

24. Do you own any really sharp knives (either kitchen, pen knives or any other knife)?

Yes, I like to cook, so own a variety of sharp knives (chef's, boning, paring, etc.) My most favored knife is my Santouki. Its weight and sharpness tend to be what I like best ATM.

lizzybuffy2008: (Default)

No, I am more of a cuddly pet person.

20. What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? Have you ever made it yourself?

That really depends on the time of the year. During strawberry, peach, and fig seasons, I usually make ice cream versions of each when they are at their peak and those are way better than any store bought. The rest of the year (unless something calls to me) I eat Ben & Jerry's Vanilla Caramel Fudge.

9. “Hata Hata” (Oh My Goodness), it’s Talk Like Jar Jar Binks Day amongst Star Wars fans. The celebration date was decided in honour of the birthday of the actor who played Jar Jar, Ahmed Best. Are you a fan of the character?

No, not really. Having seen that movie once, it did not make me want to see the other prequels.

17. Today, in 1946, George Orwell published "Animal Farm: A Fairy Story" in the United Kingdom. There have since been stage and film adaptations. Have you ever read or seen any?

I have not actually. The book is on my to read list. I am trying to get through "The Count of Monte Christo" currently.

18. It’s International Delivery Driver Appreciation Day! The first celebration took place in 2023, organised by The Hungry Panda company, a specialist food delivery company in London (UK). Do you often have items delivered?

Other than what we order from Amazon, etc., no. There really is no economical or quality food delivery here and I like to pick my own groceries.

16. Have you ever played a wind instrument such as a recorder?

No. I wanted to lay the flute as a child, but was told that my arms were too short. (Pretty sure that was a lie.)
