24. Do you own a calculator, or do you rely on your mental arithmetic skills?

I am an engineer, so of course I own a calculator. I really only use it when I do taxes though. I will mostly do stuff in my head, unless there is a lot to be added/subtracted, etc.

24. It’s the International Day of Education – what was your favourite class in school?

I liked most of them, but really loved social studies (history,) and science.

I have and have hope that I will see most of them (at least the ones I want to.)

No, it is on too late for me

3. How many of this year's Oscar nominated films have you seen?

I have seen 2 so far; "The Conclave" and "A Real Pain" (screenplay and supporting actor.) I plan to watch "Emilia Perez" this evening

4. Do you plan to see more/any of the Oscar nominated films before the Oscars ceremony?

It depends on what is released for streaming. There are a couple I don't care to see; "The Substance" and "Dune 2."

5. Do you generally seek out and watch the film that wins Best Picture?

It kind of depends on the movie, but usually I do.

24 – Flossing Day: Do you floss regularly?

I have to admit; I am not the best flosser. I tend to do it randomly and in the couple of weeks before my teeth cleaning appointment. I am blessed with strong, shiny teeth.

lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
23 – Typewriter Day: Are you old enough that you remember using typewriters in school/university/for work? Is there anything about typewriters that you kind of miss?

I actually learned how to type on a manual typewriter in 8th grade, so for the brief amount of time I used an electric; I hit the keys too hard. :-D No, I do not miss typewriters at all.

24 – World UFO Day: UFO simply means Unidentified Flying Object – not necessarily that it's an alien spaceship. Have you ever seen anything in the sky that you honestly couldn't figure out what it was? Even if you're pretty sure what you saw wasn't an alien space craft, do you think it's possible that earth is being visited by aliens?

No, even when I lived in New Mexico.

Friday Five:

1. What is your favorite fruit?

I do not really have a favorite, but enjoy most all fruits when they are fresh, in-season.

Apples are extremely varied and versatile

4. Which fruit is the most beautiful?

I don't really make fruit salad, unless you count mixing berries together in bowl.
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
24 – International Waffle Day: How do you like your waffles? Will you be celebrating today by eating any? I like waffles ok, but do not have them very often. I prefer pancakes, I think it is easier to get the butter/syrup ratio right with pancakes.

1. Forest: Do you spend a lot of time in nature? Do you want to?

Honestly, it depends on the time of year. We tend to have wet winters and early springs, so do not do a great deal outside during that time. During the rest of the year, I garden (mostly pick weeds,) walk outside, and hike some.

2. Cereal: What do you usually eat for breakfast?

Again, it depends on the day. I fluctuate between a multigrain bagel, plain yogurt with berries and homemade granola, cottage cheese with oat groats, steel cut oat groats (winter/spring,) and homemade bircher muesli (summer/fall.) One day a week, usually after a hard workout, I have eggs.

3. Flu: How do you cope with getting a minor illness?

Usually pretty well. Even with COVID, it mostly just felt like a head cold. I usually still workout, just don't swim with head colds or upper respiratory stuff.

4. Worm: What sort of dirty/messy activities do you enjoy?

I like to cook and bake; those can get messy if making bread, pizza, or anything that requires rolling out.

5. Bang: What's the last celebration you went to?

I suppose it was my women's group's Christmas dinner in early December.

1) What's the weather like where you are right now?

It is partly cloudy, low 80's and a little humid.

2) Has your weather been seasonally appropriate lately, or has it been unusual?

It has been unusual. We normally have a rainy spring and a dry summer, but it flipped this year. We had a dry spring and have had a really wet July and August (so far.)

3) Have you noticed any trends in the weather near you over the past few years?

The only trend is that there is no trend. It does seem to be warmer longer than 15 years ago.

4) Are you worried about climate change?

Yes, as should everyone, but honestly, I have no children and am in my mid 50's, so I should be gone before the worst happens.

5) Are you doing anything to combat climate change?

We try to be frugal with how much we drive, run the AC, etc. We live in an area with lots of trees and we are doing what we can to maintain that (downside, no solar panels for us.) We do plan to remove a large portion of our grass and replace with native plants to help support bees, birds, and other wildlife. We donate clothes and other items to reduce waste and try to maintain a low carbon footprint.

1. What is the last book you read and what book(s), if any, are you currently reading?

"The Plot" by Jean Haniff Korelitz was last I finished and am currently reading "The Fifth Season" by NK Jemisin.

2. How about moving pictures? Are you a fan of any TV show or movie right now?

We are watching "Stranger Things" season 4 and "Hacks" season 2

3. What's your favorite genre, and why?

I have no real favorite; I like variety, but am not a fan of the unreliable narrator.

4. If we were all evacuating the planet, and you could only bring 3 unique works of entertainment for posterity, which would you pick? Let's just assume that we've coordinated it so there are no repeats.

A large tome of pictures of great classical art, a large hard drive with favorite movies and TV shows loaded, and a separate HD with books.

5. Do you make new works as well (fannish or original both count)? Or is that not your skillset/interest?

I wrote a couple of Spuffy fanfics ages ago.

1. What does the outside of your house look like?

The style is called low country-plantation, so big front porch and windows on the front, with side entry basement garage. It used to be white (white siding with white brick below,) it is now Monterey Taupe siding with stone, instead of brick.

2. Which room do you spend the least time in?

The spare bedroom upstairs.

3. Which room do you spend the most time in?

The sunroom/tv room.

4. Is your home in a convenient location?

Mostly, we live in an older established neighborhood, so it is close to the older retail areas, downtown, and the hospitals. It is a small town, less than 100k, so nothing is more than 15 minutes away.

5. What is the color of your front door?

Mahogany stained wood.
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
23. Curtains or blinds?

I actually prefer Roman Shades or no coverings at all, but do have both curtains and blinds in my house.

Friday Five:

1. What was a skill you were proud to learn as a kid?

Writing in cursive. I learned early in first grade, so was surprised when I switched schools and had to help fifth graders who were struggling.

2. What's something you used to be good at, but can't do any more?

I used to be quite flexible and strong in yoga (when I was taking 2-3 classes per week.) Now that I am doing other things more and only sporadically taking yoga, my flexibility and ability to do inversions and binds has decreased.

3. What's something you haven't done in a long time, but you could pick it right back up again with some practice?

With more regular practice; I could be better at yoga again, also higher level math (calculus.)

4. What can you teach others to do?

If I had patience enough, I could teach others about seasonal cooking, bread making, using the mixer, baking, budgeting, organizing...lots of things. I am just not a very patient teacher.

5. What would you like to learn next?

I am trying to get better with French and I would like to learn ASL (it is possible that I will need it should my hearing deteriorate to that point.)

1) What's the furthest place you've traveled to in the last 12 months?

About a hundred miles away (a few times) to Knoxville to visit my mother in-law.

2) What's the most interesting small town within driving distance?

Asheville, NC

3) What's the coolest tourist attraction in your city?

Probably just the access to great hiking; mountains, lakes, rivers, the Appalachian Trail...

4) What was your favorite road trip you took as a kid?

The only road trip we took when I was a child was to Panama City, FL and it sucked because all I can remember is being carsick and mostly stuck in the motel room.

5) How often do you feel like you've got to get away?

In normal times, I like to get away a several times a year. A few long weekends and then one "big" vacation of of 2-3 weeks

May
1. Has a random person ever asked you for your phone number?

Of course. I grew up in the 80's with bar culture (plus I worked in a bar.) I was asked for my number 3-4 times per week, doesn't mean I gave it out...
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
1) How is your year going so far?

It is ok; I am happy for the change in the White House, but am now worried that the people who organized and incited the attempted coup will not be punished and that we are racing against the clock before more crazy conspiracy theory politicians gain power.

2) Have you gotten vaccinated yet? If not, when do you think it's likely to happen?

No, not yet. I am 53 (but do have high blood pressure [medicated],) so I am thinking sometime in the spring.

3) Are you bored or are you busy these days?

A little of both, I am going through a bit of the post holiday doldrums and feeling unmotivated.

4) Is this pandemic good or bad for your finances?

It has been good; no traveling, no eating out (we did not do very much of that anyway, but...)

5) What are you missing most these days?

I miss being able to have people over for drinks/dinner.

Out with 2020, In with 2021!

What was the best thing about 2020?

Finally getting my kitchen renovated to my specifications.

What lessons from 2020 will you carry into 2021?

Learn to appreciate everything that you have and do, because it can go away in the blink of an eye.

How did you spend your New Year's Eve?

We had an early dinner of homemade fettuccine alfredo with sparkling wine and then watched Funny Girl on Amazon.

Legend says what you did at midnight on New Year's Eve/Day is what you'll do all year. So what did you do?

Was in bed, asleep...

What are you most looking forward to in 2021?

Hopefully, being able to travel again.
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
I haven't done one in a while, but this one appealed to me:

1) What is your favorite December holiday food?

I love a good stollen with marzipan. Time got away from me this year, so I did not make one, but there is always 2021.

2) What is your favorite December holiday beverage?

Kenji Lopez-Alt has turned me into an eggnog fan: boozy and creamy. A little goes a long way.

3) What is your favorite December holiday song?

Not sure, but I love the old standards done by Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Luther Vandross, etc..

4) What is your favorite December holiday tradition?

I bake and make candy for a week or so every year and then give most all of it away. I love the joy that people express on receiving my packages of sugary goodness.

5) What is the one thing you will miss most this December because of the pandemic?

I miss being able to entertain friends in the house, sharing wine, food, and hugs.

1. How's your health this week?

Better, I have been really suffering with allergies since March, coupled with worry about COVID, but have finally started feeling better in the last few weeks.

2. What's the healthiest thing you've done recently?

I swam a mile yesterday morning.

3. What do you look for in a doctor?

Someone that wants to look for non-traditional answers and not just write a prescription. I am 52, in relatively good health and very active. I don't want to hear, "Oh, you are just getting older, take this pill..."

4. What was your most memorable childhood illness?

I do not remember much, but I turned a pot of porridge onto my right arm when I was a toddler and had terrible burns.

5. What's your most interesting scar and how did you get it?

The only scars I have from the burn are on my right ring finger, but they are probably it.

1. Have you ever been in a hurricane or typhoon? Which one, when and where?

Not exactly. When I was a child, the week after we left Panama City, FL a hurricane destroyed the motel we stayed in. In 2006, we drove 200 miles through heavy rain from the remnants of a hurricane to get to the airport in Atlanta for a flight to Spain. In 2010 we were on a temporary assignment in Wilmington, NC and a hurricane was coming up the coast, we had already told people that we would not stay and ride out a hurricane, so when it seemed imminent, we drove to our permanent home.

2. Have you ever been near an erupting volcano? Which one, when and where?

We were in Hawaii on the big island in 2008 and drove down to see Kilauea, but it was erupting on forest service land, so the closest we could get was about a mile away.

3. Are there tornadoes where you live? Has a tornado come near you?

We occasionally have tornadoes, but are in the mountains, so that kind of keeps them out for some reason. I did grow up outside Atlanta and dealt with having to go into the basement of school a few times.

4. Have you experienced severe flooding? When and where?

We have been lucky and always lived on pretty high ground, so not personally. We did have to drive around it (and turn around multiple times) a couple of years ago when visiting my mother-in-law.

5. What is the most extreme weather you have ever experienced?

I have been in two blizzards, the first in 1992 in Boston. We saw all of the blizzard conditions and could not fly home for a couple of days. The second was within 3 months in Knoxville, TN. We went to bed and woke up with two feet of snow on the ground. Everything was shut down for a week.
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
12 What is your favorite place in your home? (Post a photo?)

My newly renovated kitchen is my favorite space. I saved and planned for this renovation for ten years and most of the time am still surprised that I was able to make it happen. It is exactly how I wanted it and I am in love.

1. Where did you travel on your last vacation or other big trip?

We went to NW France (Brittany and Normandy) last fall.

2. What was the best trip you ever took? Where did you go, and with whom, and what made it so good?

I would have to say our first trip to Italy (first time outside the US) in 2000. It was a 14 day trip to North and Central Italy and it was scary, but gave both myself and my husband the travel bug. Since that first trip we have been to Europe a dozen more times and have learned so much about art, history, and other societies; I would not trade that for the world.

3. Where do you dream of traveling on your next vacation when it's safe to travel again?

We have a trip booked for September to fly to Nice. We have gotten no further in planning due to COVID and am not sure if it will happen in 2020.

4. Where are you likely to actually travel to on your next vacation when it's safe?

Probably fly into Nice and then explore Roman ruins in the South of France.

5. Do you prefer to vacation to new places each time or to familiar places -- or maybe you prefer to stay home?

Either totally new or a mixture of new and familiar. I find that I cannot get enough of Florence, Rome, Paris, etc..
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
1. Do you believe in fate?
Not really. I lean more towards believing that what happens is based on the decisions we make; i.e. "Sliding Doors."

2. If Karma was to visit you now, would it be kind or kick you in the butt?
Probably neither; I try to be the best person that I can be and help others, but I tend to be pretty judgmental (I am working on it.)

3. Do you believe you have lived another life previous to this one?
No. For me personally, there is no evidence.

4. What do you believe in with an unshakable resolve?
That, the only thing you know for sure that you have is this one life here on Earth. I think that you should make the most of it by making an effort to be your best self. To some degree or another, everyone had a crappy childhood (some much worse than others,) but you cannot let that ruin the rest of your life. Make the choice to be happy.

5. What one factor influences your life the most?
Meeting and marrying my husband completely changed the direction of my life in a good way.
lizzybuffy2008: (Default)
In my continued effort to post more...

1. Where did you grow up and do you miss it?

I grew up outside of Atlanta, GA in the US. I left when I was not quite 19 and have not lived there since. I do not really miss it. No one that I knew is still there, plus it has changed a lot, so I do not recognize much when I do visit. Plus, the heat and traffic tend to annoy me now. We are surrounded by mountains where we live now and that is the topography I have come to love. I do miss access to many restaurants and things to do, plus an international airport.

2. Which are your three favorite words in the dictionary and why?

I have no idea; have never really thought about it.

3. What is a vegetarian dish that you really like?

I love cooking and experimenting with recipes, so picking a favorite dish is pretty hard for me...I guess if I had to pick it would be a Caprese tart that I make in the summer when fresh tomatoes are in season. I have to make it every year and it something I really look forward to.

4. What do you do when you have a misunderstanding with your friend?

I am pretty honest and straight forward, so if I think something is wrong, I ask questions and try to make it right.

5 What do you daydream about?

For fun; winning the lottery when it gets to an amount where I will buy a ticket. Travel, other than that.
