27. Up-Helly-Aa is a vibrant fire festival celebrated in the UK Shetland Islands tonight. Thousands gather to witness the breathtaking sight of a longship ablaze, illuminating the night sky. Do you have any similar local winter or summer celebrations?

No, not that I am aware of. Our part of the US seems to have forgotten that traditions existed before the US was found and settled.

24. Have you ever knitted a garment or had one knitted for you?

About 10-11 years ago, I decided to learn how to knit. I finished a could of things and did not finish a couple more...we moved and I just did not pick it back up.

23. The pirate William Kidd was born this month in 1645. Have you read Treasure Island?

I have not. I need to put it on my list of classics TBR. I try to mix those in with contemporary choices.

22. In January 1496, Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tested a flying machine. Do you like flying?

I don't mind it, but I don't love it. Sometimes I can get motion sickness, so that is pretty unpleasant. Usually for me, it is a means to an end.

21. Do you like wearing colourful socks? What do the brightest socks you own look like?

Not particularly. Most of my socks are gym socks, so kind of boring. My other socks are neutral to match various pants.

20. Have you read any of the Winnie the Pooh books?

When I was a child, I did. I loved Eeyore.

17. The US celebrates Hot Buttered Rum Day today! Have you ever tried it?

I have not. I am not really much for hot alcohol drinks; maybe if I did a winter sport...

16. Do you have a favourite genre of music?

Not really. I like something in most all genres, even hip hop and country.

15. If you could, would you like to be a little bit taller or a little bit shorter?

I would love to be a couple of inches taller. I am 5'3.5" with a long torso and short legs. It would be lovely to have a couple of inches more in my leg length to balance out. Plus, it would be easier to find pants and jeans.

14. Mark Antony was born today in Rome in 83BCE. Have you ever seen “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and Richard Burton as Mark Antony?

13. January is the best time to see the bright gas giant planet Jupiter in the sky – have you ever seen it?

Not sure that I could really spot it with the naked eye, but a few years ago we looked at it through our neighbor's telescope.

12. In 1948, the first Supermarket in the UK opened - the Co-op, the country’s first permanent self-service store, in East London’s Manor Park. Do you use one specific supermarket to buy groceries, and do they have a loyalty card scheme you belong to? How does it work?

Yes, I do my weekly shopping at one store. They are close to my house, easy to get to from swimming, well stocked, and clean. They do not have loyalty cards; sales are open to everyone. I do not buy meat or fish there though. If I want those, I either go to the farmer's market or an organic store.

11. The first National State lottery in England was drawn in 1569. The first prize was £5,000, and other prizes included tapestries and high-quality linen cloth. How much does it cost to enter where you live (and have you ever bought a ticket)?

There are two (mostly) national lotteries; Mega Millions and Powerball. The first one is now $5 a ticket and the second is $2. I don't ever see myself buying a MM ticket again. $5 is just too much. When PB gets over $300 million, I always say that we should buy a ticket, but in reality usually forget to.

10. Are you impulsive, or do you take time to make decisions?

I mostly take my time, particularly where money is involved. I used to be fairly impulsive, but as I have grown older, I prefer to try and think things through a bit more.

9. What time do you usually get up and go to bed each day?

On MWF, I get up at 4:30AM and go to bed at 8:00PM, read and turn off the light at 9:00PM. On T & Th, I get up at 5:15AM and go to bed with the same schedule. Sa & Su, I am usually up by 6:00AM with bedtime the same on Sunday, but maybe increased 30 minutes to an hour on Saturday.

8. Do you look back on your school days with fondness? What was your favourite subject to learn?

Yes and no. I changed schools quite a few times. I loved the private schools and did not so much the public...not as many rules for decorum in public. I did love learning though. My favorites were science and history. I did well in math (hence the engineering,) but did not love it.

30. It’s National Bacon Day! What’s your favourite way to eat bacon? Have you ever tried vegan ‘bacon’?

I prefer bacon as a flavoring in things, like pasta rather than to just eat it.

We have a dishwasher. Some things still get washed by hand though: pots and pans, knives, china...
