Dec. 29th, 2025 05:59 am29. In 1886, the dishwasher was patented. It was invented by Josephine Cochran, who lived in Shelbyville, Illinois. She constructed the first one and won a prize at the Chicago World Fair (and was used by the restaurant industry). Do you own a dishwasher or wash your dishes by hand?
We have a dishwasher. Some things still get washed by hand though: pots and pans, knives, china...

Dec. 27th, 2025 08:11 am27. Do you have a favourite way of using up leftovers?
I like leftovers, so normally we just have them for lunch and/or dinner for a couple of days. Sometimes, when it is something big like a turkey, I will re-purpose the leftover meat into other dishes: turkey tikka masala, turkey nachos, etc. I need to find something like that to do with our leftover Christmas lamb, since there is so much of that left.

Dec. 23rd, 2025 09:30 am23. What do you think of eggnog?
I had never had it until about 20 years ago. I had some that someone else made and I did not like it at all. Years later I saw an article from Kenji Lopez Alt and decided to do my own. I fell in love with it then. We do not have it every year, but we will this year, since we are having people over after Christmas.

Dec. 21st, 2025 10:16 am19. What’s the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
Probably something K said or showed me. I don't remember exactly.
20. Have you ever had to wear a neck tie?
No, nt that I can remember.
21. Yule is celebrated today to honour the triumph of light over darkness. As the longest night passes in the Northern Hemisphere, people rejoice in the promise of longer days. What time is sunset for you today?
Sunset is 5:18PM today and that is fine with me. I enjoy holiday/special dinners more when it is full dark out.

Dec. 18th, 2025 07:31 am18. Have you ever been ice skating?
Yes, twice in my 58 years. Once as a child on a school trip (my only memory being not being able to walk in them and having to crawl out of the bathroom) and once as an adult with another couple that wanted to go (the husband had to hold me up the entire time.) I have seen those little walker things they have for new people, so if I could have one of those, I would try it again.

Dec. 16th, 2025 07:42 am16. Do you still use post-it notes to remind you of things?
No, but I do use them for other things. Physical post-its were nice with a desktop computer, but do not work well with laptops. I use basically the same thing, virtually on the computer though.

31. It’s New Year’s Eve – how would you sum up 2025 on a scale of one to ten? Let’s stay positive - what was the best thing that happened to you this year?

Dec. 14th, 2025 07:53 am14. What’s your favourite type of biscuit/cookie? Ever made biscuits/cookies at home from scratch (for example at Christmas)?
I like all kinds of cookies, but I really love good shortbread cookies. I bake all year long, that includes cookies. Although, most of those get done at the holidays for giving to others.
In fact, I just finished this year's treats yesterday. I made eight things this year: almond butter toffee, ginger rum balls, hermits, lemon bars, apricot-cardamum jam cookies, chewy chocolate cookies, thing and salty oatmeal cookies, and cornmeal-orange cookies.

Dec. 13th, 2025 07:44 am13. When you open your front door to a guest, what is the first item (apart from you!) that they see when they come inside?
If they look to their right, they see a print on the wall and a table with a lamp and some knick knacks. If they look to their left, they see the stairs to go to the second floor. If they look straight ahead, they see an entry way that leads to the dining room and beyond that the sunroom and beyond that the patio.

Dec. 8th, 2025 05:11 am8. Today is Green Monday: the most lucrative shopping day of the year. This is usually the last day that people can shop online so that the purchases can still arrive in time for the holidays. What’s the last thing you bought from an online retailer?
A Christmas present for K. We are only getting each other a couple of things this year, since we decided to get some gym equipment as our big present.

Dec. 7th, 2025 08:37 am7. Have you ever tried an alcoholic cocktail, or a non-alcoholic mocktail? Do you have a favourite?
Ha-ha-ha...We do not want to get into how many I have had or tried over the years. My current favorite (for the past few years) is a Perfect Manhattan made with rye, Italian sweet vermouth, extra dry vermouth and rhubarb bitters with a homemade brandied cherry.
I do not have much experience with mocktails, but have not been happy with any of the non-alcoholic liquors I have purchased over the years.
