I believe they need to tell the truth; period. It does not matter who it reflects badly on, the truth is always better than lies.
Also, a good part of why Trump was able to succeed was due to the media and its "false equivalence" between his actions and Hillary Clinton's and the fact that he was the front page/leading story in every newspaper and every new broadcast for six years, which made him seem "relevant" to some people when he never should have been a blip on the radar.
