21 – International Mother Language Day: What is your native language? How many languages do you speak fluently or near-fluently? How many languages besides your native language have you studied?

American-English. Just English. I took 3 semesters of French in college, but the last semester I did not get much out of because the teacher had a very strong southern accent. I have been studying French via Duolongo for 3+ years, so I can read it pretty well, but I think in order to speak it fluently, I would need to live in France and be immersed in it. I do not think that I have a brain for languages.

I find the grammar really hard and I'm trying to improve my French (which I also learned at school). It's really odd what I remember and what I struggle with - but that's probably because I was in a generation where they didn't teach you grammar at all (someone's stupid idea for education at the time). It really causes issues when you don't know what things like conjunctions are!

I can't imagine being taught French by someone with a Southern accent! I had a German teacher who was Swiss and Swiss German pronunciation is very different from German. Can you pick up any French channels on your TV?

It made everything we had learned before sound different and wrong, so I ended up dropping the class. No, we don't have access to a French channel (that I know of.)
