I was 21. I got my learner's permit at 15, but then never really learned how to drive. We were living in a big city where I could take public transportation to work, but then I was promoted and transferred to the burbs. I had to learn and start driving immediately; sink or swim learning at its best. Same kind of thing happened when I learned to drive stick.
