I think it depends on the person giving the gift. I have enough "stuff," so if someone is giving me a real gift, I would prefer it to be consumable (wine, olive oil, fleur de sel...) I always forget that I have gift cards and sometimes find them difficult (AMEX, Visa,) so if someone is going to go that route, cash would be nice.
